Some good and some not so good

Pros:
1. Cheaper than competition, $400 vs $600
2. More cuutters, and they are truly helical
3. Arrived quickly
4. Works really well. The blades on my 2012NB lasted nearly 10y, but eventually with tough hardwood (hemlock) it was almost impossible to get through. The new cutterhead works well. Quieter, small shavings, and smooth surfaces. I hope it lasts.

Cons:
1. As with most things Chinese, no instructions. I found two videos on the web. Both make the mistake to take off the top of the machine. There is no need for that.
2. The descriptions says "This well-machined helical spiral cutterhead is built to perfectly fit your Makita 2012NB machine."
That is not true. The original cutterhead is not circular, but flattened at the two blade sides. The hole on the pulley side is sized accordingly, so the head can be pulled out to the side. With the helical head that does not fit. One video suggests to grind the opening circular to slide the head in. That is not quite necessary. One can drop the head in from above, but that still requires removing some material from the opening in the frame, which is extremely tedious (took me almost 3h). I believe the cutterhead could be machined a bit differently so that one could drop it in from above without having to modify the frame. I bet the engineers never tried to install it themselves or they would have found out.
3. The carbide inserts need to be installed first. One video is wrong saying the inserts need to be screwed in after placing the head. That’s possible but make it more tedious. Here is my gripe: No information on the torque required to fasten the screws. Although it would be difficult to over tighten the screw it is still possible, and one overtightened stew might ruin the entire piece. I think it is important that the screws are tightened consistently so the torque needs to be known.

Overall I do not regret the buy but I would have liked to know in advance what I’m facing.
